The New York Yankees have taken Devin Williams out of the ninth inning. Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced Sunday that Williams has been removed as closer following his latest poor showing in which he gave up three earned runs Friday.

Set-up man Luke Weaver, who blossomed after moving into the closer role last fall in place of Clay Holmes, will “get a lot of” save opportunities moving forward, Boone said. The manager is also comfortable with using Weaver in a big spot earlier in the game, using other relievers in a save spot when necessary.

With the Yankees leading, 2-1, Williams surrendered a leadoff hit to George Springer, then hit Andres Gimenez in the thigh with a fastball. The next batter, Alejandro Kirk, hammered a double over the head of Trent Grishman ( (to where??)) that scored both runners. That brought an end to Williams’ outing as he was replaced by Mark Leiter Jr.
