The White House has taunted Mark Carney over Donald Trump’s desire to turn Canada into America’s 51st state, saying a remarkable election result does not change that plan – even as Mr Trump himself congratulated the Canadian prime minister on his victory.

In a social media post on the day of Canada's election, President Donald Trump suggested that Canadians should vote for him in order for Canada to become the 51st state.

Canada's Liberal Party secured a fourth consecutive term after a narrow win in an election that was seen as one of the most consequential in its recent history. Prime Minister Mark Carney flipped his party's fortunes with a campaign focused on combating President Trump’s tariffs and threats of annexation.
