BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A judge on Wednesday ordered the release of a Palestinian man who led protests against the war in Gaza as a student at Columbia University and was arrested by immigration officials during an interview about finalizing his U.S. citizenship.

Mohsen Mahdawi was detained as part of a broader crackdown by the Trump administration on international students. A federal judge ordered him released Wednesday.

The judge in Vermont ordered the government to release Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian student at Columbia University detained April 14.

Milwaukee County Chief Judge Carl Ashley said, "We're all concerned" about Judge Dugan's arrest and questioned "whether that process was necessary."

Judge Hannah Dugan will have a preliminary hearing in May. Her case would likely eventually go before a grand jury.
