Eli Coenen, a redshirt sophomore defensive tackle at Illinois, announced his transfer commitment to the Spartans on Monday. He had 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 13 games this season for the Fighting Illini and has two years of eligibility remaining.
Prior to Illinois, Coenen actually began his career at Division II Bemidji State. Coenan, listed by Illinois at 6-foot-7 and 290 pounds, had a breakout season in 2024 after redshirting as a true freshman, which allowed him to move up to the Big Ten level. He's a fast riser who, especially with his great size, has some big potential.
Michigan State football defensive back Jeremiah Hughes entered the transfer portal after two years in East Lansing. The one time LSU defensive back spent one season in Baton Rouge before two seasons with the Spartans. Now, he has found his new destination, staying well traveled.

Smith spent the last three years in South Bend after being a three-star recruit out of Frisco Reedy High School in Texas as the No. 78 overall receiver, according to 247 Sports' composite ranking.
