At least 39 people died in southern Spain after a high-speed train derailed and collided with an oncoming one on Sunday (January 18) night, marking the worst railway accident in the country since 2013.

At least 15 people have been injured after a commuter train derailed and crashed in Catalonia, emergency services said.

Spanish police said 159 people were injured, of whom five were in critical condition.
