Arizona has 112 death row inmates. Firing squad as a means of execution has been in the headlines more and more. On Friday, a South Carolina man chose death by firing squad for his planned execution in two weeks.

Arizona lawmakers consider reinstating the firing squad as a death penalty method because of issues with lethal injections. House committee passed a relevant bill, which now progresses through the legislature.

The sponsor, Scottsdale Republican Rep. Alexander Kolodin, repeatedly told the House Committee on Regulatory Oversight his House Concurrent Resolution 2024 was inspired by an independent review of the death penalty that Gov. Katie Hobbs commissioned, and later spiked.

On Wednesday, Senate Judiciary and Rules Committee members voted 6-3 to advance HB 37, a bill which would replace lethal injection with death by firing squad as Idaho’s primary execution method for death row inmates. Currently, the firing squad is Idaho’s secondary method.
