Unrivaled, the new 3-on-3 basketball league co-founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, tipped off in Miami on Friday, and the opening night got off to a thrilling start. Six-time WNBA All-Star Skylar Diggins-Smith hit a walk-off 3-pointer to lift Lunar Owls BC to a big comeback win over Mist BC, 84-80.
The newest domestic women’s basketball league tipped off Friday, as Unrivaled staged its first two games outside of Miami. The 3×3 league co-founded by stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart intends to provide WNBA stars an alternative to playing overseas in the offseason. Ten 2024 WNBA All-Stars took the court for Unrivaled’s debut.
In the nightcap, the youthful Vinyl, featuring three under-25 players, beat the veteran Rose. Boston and Rae Burrell played a smaller role, combining to score 19 points, as 2024 Olympic 3x3 women's basketball bronze medalists Rhyne Howard (33 points) and Dearica Hamby (17 points) flourished, but each had meaningful contributions.
The league will officially begin play on Friday, Jan. 18. The first game will be Collier's Lunar Owls BC against Stewart's Mist BC. It will start at 6 p.m. CT, followed by a second game at 7 p.m. CT. The Finals are scheduled to take place on Monday, March 17. The entire league season will be broadcast on TNT. TruTV and Max.
