In 1918, Anna Harkness founded the Commonwealth Fund with the mandate that it should “do something for the welfare of mankind.” Among the first women to establish a foundation, Harkness initially endowed the foundation with a gift of nearly $10 million.

The Commonwealth Fund produces a wide variety of publications, from issue briefs, case studies, and multimedia features to Q&As with leading experts.

The Commonwealth Fund focuses on three core areas where we believe we can make the biggest difference: Coverage, Care, and Cost.We also look abroad for ideas and inspiration to improve health care in the U.S. through our International work.And we support initiatives to improve health and health care in our home base, New York City.
