On 19 February 1942, Darwin was bombed. Japanese fighters and bombers attacked the port and shipping in the harbour twice during the day, killing 252 Allied service personnel and civilians. Between 1942 and late 1943, Darwin and the surrounding area were attacked more than 60 times. But it was the first attack on 19 February that was the largest and most destructive.
