On March 23rd., the island town of San Pedro became Belize’s official COVID-19 ground zero. And shortly after the announcement of the first confirmed case of COVID-19, the island was completely locked down with no one allowed to leave or return. Hundreds of people were left stranded on the island, the majority of them, seasonal workers. They’ve been trying to leave ever since and some of them managed to. But Saturday morning saw the largest group yet finally get off the island. Cherisse Halsall

And while the unemployed are waiting for COVID funds for their relief, those stranded on San Pedro have FINALLY been getting a break to leave the island after being stuck there for two weeks. The approved exodus from San Pedro started from the weekend and continued this morning when boatloads of mainlanders were screened, approved for passage, and allowed to return to shore. Those from the Cayo district, were told to remain on the island - since no one can enter or exit that district. And this m

Now in San Pedro there’s a real quarantine and a state of emergency in effect, and it’s been extended to 30 days. That town is in a virtual lockdown, with no boats or planes in or out of the island. Things get a little busy between 7:00 and 10:00 am when shops, bakeries, and gas stations are permitted to open, but after midday, it goes back to silent mode. Residents tell us that those who still have money line up outside to get a turn inside the shops to get some groceries. It’s a tough situatio

San Pedro Suffers Tonight, San Pedro is suffering through a brutal blackout. It started at 10:20 this morning and power is not expected to be restored until 11:30 tonight. But many hotels and resorts do not have a backup generator so - they took a blackout beating! So what’s it really been like for island residents and guests? We ask

Major Failure For San Pedro Gas Turbine These days, there has been a lot less load shedding than we saw a month ago. And on top of that, the June rains are slowly coming down. However, it’s not enough to fill the BECOL reservoirs and the state of Belize’s electricity supply is still not stable. In fact, today BEL’s chairman described it as “precarious.” One of the reasons for that is that the gas turbine in San Pedro, which was to come on stream mid-June, is experiencing major difficulties.
