After World War I, Wilhelm II, the last German Kaiser, was forced to abdicate the throne as the German Empire collapsed. Rather than face trial or revolution at home, he was granted exile in the Netherlands, where he lived quietly while Germany moved on without its monarchy. Wilhelm spent more than 20 years in exile, watching the rise of the Weimar Republic—and later Nazi Germany—from afar. When he died in 1941, during World War II, he left explicit instructions in his will: his body was not to
