On February 23, 1991, a fire broke out on the 22nd floor at One Meridian Plaza in Center City and raged out of control until the early morning hours. The blaze seriously damaged the building, destroying eight floors and damaging neighboring buildings. Three firefighters perished in the blaze. The building was condemmed and demolished in 1998 after several insurance lawsuits. The Residences at the Ritz-Carlton currently sits on the site.
